Eco Sevi

June 9, 2015

"We are 100% vegan owned and operated -- as a matter of fact we were one of the first all vegan companies out there formulating products and bringing attention to one of the most crucial aspects of formulating a vegan product. Ingredients being tested on animals were overlooked/ignore and we were probably the only company doing things the hard way at the time. Choosing this path meant spending hours of research time, contacting raw material manufacturers and asking for documentation on the raw materials we wanted to work with. Our ingredient choices dwindled down nearly by 80%, leaving us with very few choices, which made things very difficult for us, but we would not have had it any other way :D

Unfortunately, even companies using the term 100% vegan on a particular product formulate products that are not vegan -- quite a few companies own several brands (think Estee Lauder, which owns Aveda, La Mer,  Bobby Brown, Clinique, Ojon, Origins, MAC, ) and use the same manufacturing facility. Some companies create a vegan line in addition to their main non-vegan lines and promoted them under different brands.

Beauty industry is not so pretty at times and that is why us vegans have to stay united. It is wonderful that you keep asking questions, don't ever stop!

Now onto what we do! Our vegan policy can be found on our website, under about us section, http://www.ecosevi.com/pages/our-vegan-policy and we are not sold in China and do not plan on selling anywhere outside of the United States at this time. We may work with some Canadian or European companies (France, England) perhaps, but that is the extend we plan on expanding. We hand-craft products and do not plan on mass-producing, hence we won't be all over the world :)"

Very clear and thorough response! I believe this company is cruelty-free and vegan.

Molly Rose Balms

June 9, 2015

"Thank you so much for your interest in our products! In answer to your questions, Molly Rose Balms is an independent company that never rests on animals, nor are any of our products our ingredients ever tested on animals. We also do not sell to anyone who requires animal testing. We do use dyes in some of our products which have been formally regulated by the FDA, which does not require animal testing. Therefore, all of our products are 100% vegan."

They haven't mentioned if they required verification from their suppliers that they don't test on animals, so I requested some clarification. I got a response that they do require it. Based on the above, I believe this brand to be cruelty-free and 100% vegan.

Original Sprout

June 10, 2015

"Thank you for your interest in our products.  Our company  is privately owned.  All of our products are 100% vegan.  We do not accept any ingredient known to be derived from an animal.  Our products are independently tested by two FDA approved labs.

Original Sprout is proudly sold in China and made in America."

I'm so upset to hear that this company isn't cruelty-free. They didn't even try to state that they don't test on animals and "proudly" sell their products in China. This brand is certified by PETA and I'm not sure why. I don't consider it to be cruelty-free.

trèStiQue

June 9, 2015

The company answered all of my questions, but hasn't specified if they require verification from their supplier. I requested verification and am waiting for their response.

UPDATE:

June 12, 2015

The company verified that they require verification from their suppliers.

5) Is Nouveau Organica owned by a parent company? If so, what is the parent company's animal testing policy? NOUVEAU/ORGANICA IS AN INDEPENDENTLY-OWNED PRIVATE COMPANY, OWNED 100% BY MYSELF. ALSO TO NOTE THAT NOUVEAU/ORGANICA IS NOT BACKED BY INVESTORS/THIRD PARTY COMPANIES, ALL CAPITAL IS RAISED BY MYSELF, THEREFORE THE FINANCIALS OF NOUVEAU/ORGANICA DOES NOT COME FROM POTENTIAL ANIMAL-TESTING COMPANIES, INVESTORS OR THIRD-PARTY COMPANIES.
6) Does your company or the parent company sell make-up products in China or any other country which requires or reserves the right to animal test products sold there? WE DO NOT SELL IN CHINA OR OTHER COUNTRIES WHOSE GOVERNMENTS MANDATE ANIMAL TESTING FOR PRODUCTS BEING SOLD IN THEIR MARKET. All my questions are answered. I believe this company to be 100% cruelty-free!

Poo~Pourri

June 9, 2015

"Thank you for reaching out and thank you for loving our 4-leggeds friends. We do not do any animal testing for our product, however we have tested on a LOT of stinky humans. Yep, we just love our sometimes-stinky job! Keep hugging your pets… they love it and if you are ever by Addison, Texas we would love a hug too!"

Received very generic statement from them that was just copy-pasted from FAQ on their website. I requested more clarification from them.

Jane Carter Solution

June 9, 2015

"We don't test on animals at all. We are a family owned company. We currently don't sell in China and we are vegan friendly. "

This response is pretty generic so I requested some clarification. These are the questions I asked:

1) Are your products or raw materials tested on animals by a third-party?
2) Do you require verification from your suppliers and manufacturers that they don’t test on animals?
3) Are all of your products vegan?

Here's the response I received:

"No they are not, we do have confirmed signatures that none of our raw material companies test on animals, or our contract manufacturers.

Yes, all of our products are vegan although, there may be some products in the market that aren't. We used to use a Hydrolyzed Silk Protein, which is from Silkworms, we now use a Quinoa Protein.

So, please just check out the labels, any newer products will have the Quinoa Protein. "

They cleared everything up and answered all of my questions. I believe this brand to be 100% cruelty-free and vegan. (Although gotta watch out for older products that weren't vegan)

Ferro Cosmetics

June 8, 2015

They answered almost all of my questions with the exception of whether they confirm with their suppliers that the ingredients haven't been tested on animals. They're also almost vegan with the exception of their Ultimate Foundation, which uses silk powder.
I requested verification about their suppliers and will update once I have it.

ARTDECO

June 8, 2015

"ARTDECO explicitly declines animal testing.

Since its foundation ARTDECO has neither carried out nor commissioned any animal tests. Animal testing for decorative cosmetic products has been prohibited under the German Animal Welfare Act since 1986. Tests on animals for all cosmetic finished products have been banned since 1998. A corresponding ban has been in place since March 2011 for cosmetic raw materials as well, which ARTDECO expressly welcomes! Pursuant to this legislation, raw materials developed for use in cosmetics may no longer be tested for compatibility on animals. ARTDECO specifically requests confirmation of its suppliers that no animal tests were carried out. The skin compatibility of ARTDECO products is tested by volunteers in a renowned dermatological clinic. Therefore ARTDECO products can officially be declared as ‘clinically tested’. The application or patch tests (epicutaneous tests) are carried out by voluntary test persons to determine the local tolerance of the products.

ARTDECO is against animal testing.

What comes to your question regarding vegan friendly options we have to inform you that with ARTDECO there is no product line which is rewarded as vegan. Therefore we do not keep any lists with vegan products."

Everything here looks good, however they haven't mentioned China and if they test when required by law. I have requested that clarification and will update when I receive it.

June 8, 2015

The company stated that their raw materials or manufacturing process through finished goods are not tested on animals. However, they haven't specified whether they require verification from their suppliers of raw materials. They're also not sold in China. Them and their parent company Beauty 21 are certified by PETA and are on Logical Harmony's Grey Area list. I requested clarification about their suppliers from the company.

Models Own

April 23, 2015

"Models Own takes the welfare of animals very seriously, and we have never tested any of our products or ingredients on animals, either directly or through third parties. "

Everything looks good, however they didn't mention whether they sell in China. I requested clarification, but they're going to the gray list for now.

ModelCo

April 23, 2015

"We do not test on animals nor work with any companies who test on animals. We ensure that all of our suppliers and manufacturers are aware of our stance. We do not sell our products in China nor do we intend to given their stance on animal testing. ModelCo do not have a parents company"

Based on this information I believe this company to be cruelty-free. They're also certified by PETA.

June 7, 2015

"1) No.  Superchic Lacquer finished products are never tested on animals.
2) No.  Superchic Lacquers are never tested on animals within any stage of production.
3) No.  Superchic Lacquer does not hire or arrange for any third party animal testing to be performed.

6) No.  Superchic Lacquer nor Wonder Beauty Products is not engaged in selling any products ie, make-up, cosmetics or nail polishes for resale in any other country, hence animal testing of products is not applicable.
7) Yes.  All Superchic Lacquer and Wonder Beauty products are 100% Vegan and Cruelty Free."

The company answered all of my questions thoroughly and I'm confident to say that they're cruelty-free and 100% vegan. I'm very happy when companies can provide clear answers to their customers.

June 7, 2015

"1) Absolutely not, we do not conduct any testing or experimenting on Animals at any stage of our product development process.
2) We do not conduct any testing or experimenting on Animals at any stage of our product development process.

6) No we do not sell in China nor do we affiliate Zabana Essentials with any company that reserves the right to preform animal testing.

All of my questions were answered thoroughly. I'm confident to say that is brand is free from any form of animal testing plus they're 100% vegan! They're also certified by PETA for being cruelty-free and vegan. They also have wonderful customer service. The lady answering my questions was really nice and helpful. They responded to my inquiry within hours.

*This question was about their ingredients.
**This question was about their products being vegan.

H&M

June 7, 2015

"To answer all your questions, we do not test our make up on animals, as most other companies do, to ensure if its safe for our customers to purchase."

Very generic and didn't address most of my questions. I requested clarification.

UPDATE:

June 8, 2015

"•H&M does not accept animal testing on any cosmetic products, either during production or on finished products.
•We do not allow the use of cosmetic ingredients which have been tested on animals after 11 March 2009 relating to cosmetic ingredient development or cosmetic ingredient safety assessment."

Still nor clear about China and testing as required by law. I requested more clarification.

Pupa

December 18, 2013

"Pupa has always been committed to being aligned with the present and future decisions of legislation.
As a consequence, our finished products are not tested on animals, as laid down since 2004 by legislation on cosmetics.
Our way of proceeding voluntarily follows the guidelines of the European Community which recommend, for ethical reasons, the carrying out in sequence in vitro tests and in vivo tests on human volunteers under dermatological control.
The in vitro test predicts any irritation, so that all human volunteers can take part into the in vivo test in complete safety.
As far as the ingredients are concerned, a distinction has to be made: those that have been used for decades in the production of cosmetics have a toxicological file which includes all the data regarding the testing on animals done in the past, whilst for raw materials discovered since 2009, it is compulsory for testing on animals to be replaced by scientifically valid alternative methods.
In addition, from 2009 to 2013, the prohibition has gradually also been extended to the sale of cosmetics containing ingredients tested on animals in countries outside the EU.
In conclusion, despite the important progress that has been made in recent years, the exclusive recourse to alternative methods still requires commitment and development of scientific knowledge so that these methodologies can guarantee all the aspects of product and ingredient safety to protect the health of consumers, which remains the real priority.

Pupa exports its products both to Europe and outside Europe.
None of the countries where our products go requires safety tests on animals for our products to be registered and put on sale. To date, Pupa products are not present on the Chinese market."

Everything looks good to me.

Dior

December 14, 2013

"Our principal mission and our duty: to guarantee safe, high quality products for our consumers. Committed to upholding consumer’s confidence in its products, the LVMH group has always endeavoured to supply products of consistently high, impeccable quality.
Thus, the products we develop comply with the strictest legislations throughout the world, whilst also meeting our internal development criteria and the most stringent quality, traceability and safety constraints. This dual requisite guarantees the product’s safety for the consumer.
LVMH holds customer satisfaction at heart and our foremost priority is to ensure the safety of products which are placed on the market. The Group complies with all regulations currently in force. Therefore, Parfums Christian Dior has stopped carrying out tests on animals for products placed on the EU market.
The LVMH Group is one of the few Perfumes and Cosmetics groups investing in the international validation of alternative methods and to have set up an " in vitro Toxicology department " for the testing of raw materials and ingredients "in house ". Thus, the group plays a leading role in the development of alternative methods and is involved in, for instance, the "Fund for Alternatives to Animal Testing" in the United States and the "Opal" programme in France.
Parfums Christian Dior exports its products worldwide. To date, there is no harmonization of risk assessment methods and different regulatory regimes coexist in the world in terms of animal testing. In China, the authorities require us to make our products available to be tested in accredited laboratories of State for registration of products.
Furthermore, concerning the presence of animal derived ingredients in our products, LVMH’s policy regarding this sensitive issue is very clear and simple: the ban of all animal extracts as cosmetic ingredients.

Our goal is the protection of consumer’s safety which relies on our products, taking into account the respect of animal life.
We ensure the absence of animal derivatives, to the exception of the following: carmine, honey, royal jelly, beeswax, lanolin milk, fish and their derivatives. For lanoline, milk and their derivatives, a certificate of origin is mandatory. Lanoline and derivatives, however, are avoided to the most. "

I'm very upset to say that Dior makes cosmetics available for testing in China. However, I respect the company a lot for being so transparent with the customer.

BH Cosmetics

December 4, 2013

"Thank you for your interest in BH Cosmetics.  We  require all of our Manufacturers, affiliate companies, or third parties to sign a legal and binding document that they do not and will not test our products or raw materials and animals.  Our products are not tested on animals. "

They didn't specify about China. Will ask for clarification and update. Gray list for now.

June 7, 2015
UPDATE:
I asked all of my questions again and received the following response:

"Please be assured that we never test on animals or associate with suppliers who test on animals."

Again, very generic and doesn't address all of my questions. Requests for clarification haven't been responded to. However, I just noticed that they're certified by Leaping Bunny, but they're on Logical Harmony's Gray Area list. I'm honestly not sure whom to trust in this situation. The response I got from them before is more in depth. I'm going to leave them in Gray Area list till I get more clarification from them and it's your choice to decide whom you trust. I would also recommend contacting the company yourself and seeing how they respond to you.

Medena

December 3, 2013

"Our cosmetic products are not tested on animals by Medena AG, Skin Concept AG nor by other companies.
We follow both Swiss and European regulations and we produce all the cosmetic products according to the European Norm ISO 22716.
In the same way ingredients and raw materials are not tested on animals by Medena AG nor Skin Concept AG.

Our cosmetic products are not sold in regions, where animal testing is required by law."

Everything seems good, however they didn't specify whether their ingredients are tested by a third party. I'll request clarification.

Prada

December 6, 2013

"We would like to inform you that Prada Parfums does not perform animal testing nor do we use animal derived ingredients, according to the European Regulation.

Prada Parfums is a pioneer in adopting in vitro techniques. We carry out various in vitro tests in our own laboratories, which have been validated by the ECVAM (European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods).

We also use alternative methods in the process of testing ocular tolerance, and constant efforts are dedicated to Research, Formulation and Evaluation of our products.

Furthermore, in order to guarantee the safety of our products, we analyze all technical information on the raw materials from our suppliers and follow the latest bibliographical studies and specialists' data bases.

In this way, we will continue to provide our customers with the highest quality fragrances, ensuring both safety and strict compliance with the current legal and regulatory framework."

Based on this e-mail they're cruelty-free, however they confirmed that they're sold in China. I'm not sure whether perfumes need to be tested in China, they didn't specify whether third parties perform testing on their materials. They're on the Brands to Avoid list on Logical Harmony. I'm putting them in the gray list and it's up to you to decide.

em michele phan

December 3, 2013

"em michelle phan does not test any of our products on animals, nor do we allow anyone to test our products on animals. also, all of our applicators are made with 100% synthetic hair and not use animal hair."

Didn't mention whether the ingredients are tested. Requested clarification. Going to the gray list for now.

Make-up Studio

December 6, 2013

"We produce our products here in Holland and we don't test any products or ingredients  an animals."

Didn't mention third-party testing and whether they sell in China. Clarification has been requested, but they go on the Grey list for now.

Golden Rose

December 17, 2013

"We have an animal testing policy.
Products and components of products are not being tested on animals.
Vegan is an assertive concept. We provide raw metarial from a lot of country
of the world and some of these raw metarials consist of a few substances. So
we dont assert a claim about this case."

This is a very vague statement. I have requested clarification and will update. Grey list for now.

Thursday, June 4, 2015

Boo-Boo Cover up

June 4, 2015

"Boo-Boo Cover-Up is a wholly owned private company that does not use animal products or test on animals."

Here's a statement I received from the brand. This is not clear to me and I requested clarification. For now they're going to the gray list and I will update once I have more information from the company.

UPDATE:
June 12, 2015

"Yes, our manufacturers provide Origin Statements on individual ingredients in the formula to verify vegan friendliness when required.

Boo-Boo Cover-Up does not distribute directly to China, but International Orders can be placed for individual sales online here:

This is the response that I received, still unsure whether their suppliers test or not. They said they verify vegan friendliness, but not animal testing. They stay on gray list for now.

Keratherapy

June 4, 2015

The company answered all of my questions. They themselves don't test on animals, however they don't require verification of that from their suppliers. They're also sold in China and don't offer any vegan or vegetarian options. Not a company I want to support.

Wednesday, June 3, 2015

CoTZ

June 3, 2015

I contacted the brand with my list of questions. They responded almost right away with a very clear response to each question and also attached notarized statements about not testing on animals. I'm confident to say that this brand is cruelty-free! They're also 100% vegan.

TEMPTU

April 24, 2015

"1. TEMPTU products are not tested on animals at any stage of production or the finished product.
2. We do not have a third party that test of animals.
3. Our ingredients are not tested on animals and we not have information available in regards to suppliers and manufacturers requirements.
4. TEMPTU is not owned by patent company. We privately owned.
5. Are products are sold around the world and China. However, they are not test on animals in any country.
6. TEMPTU products do not contain animals products, however, each product available for purchase has their ingredients listed next the description.
For Example: http://temptu.com/shop/makeup/foundation/air-pod-foundation.html
Unfortunately, our products are not listed as vegan."
This is the response I received from them. They don't require verification from their suppliers and they sell in China. Based on that information, I can't consider them to be Cruelty free. They go on my "Not Cruelty-Free list". The brand is currently pending on Logical Harmony and I'll update when she adds them to one of her lists.

Briogeo

April 24, 2015

"1. Does your company test ingredients or finished products on animals?  No.

2. Do you test ingredients or products on animals through a third party?  No.

3. Do your manufacturers test ingredients or products on animals?  Not to our knowledge.

4. Who is your parent company if you have one, and are you owned or affiliated with any companies that test products or ingredients on animals?  No.

5. Do you/your parent company currently or have plans to market and sell your products in the China?  Not at the current time.

6.  Are all of your products vegan? If not do you have a list of vegan products?  Please see below:
Vegan:
Be Gentle, Be Kind Green Tea Shampoo
Be Gentle, Be Kind Avocado + Quinoa Co-Wash
Blossom & Bloom Ginseng + Biotin Volumizing Conditioner
Rosarco Oil"

This is the response I received from the company. They altered my questions a little bit. From what I see, they don't require verification from their suppliers on ingredient testing. Because of that, I can't consider them cruelty free.

Hikari Cosmetics

April 27, 2015

"Thank you for your interest in Hikari Cosmetics! Our products are manufactured in China and while there is a common misconception about all products manufactured there it is a law in China that if the products that are made and exported to be sold outside of China it is not a requirement to test on animals. Our products are not tested on animals and we do not require it by any third party testing. There are extra steps and costs to ensure that products are vegan, but we do not require that testing to be done on our products. We hope this addresses any concerns you have. Let us know if there is anything else we can do for you!"

This response is a bit unclear. I'm still not sure whether they're sold in China and whether their ingredients are tested on animals. I requested verification. Until then they'll be on grey list.

UPDATE:

June 2, 2015

"As stated in our previous email, since our products are exported to be sold in the United States our manufacturers are not allowed to test on animals. We visit their sites a minimum of twice a year to ensure that this is being enforced. We do not sell our products in China. Let us know if there is anything else we can help you with. Have a great Tuesday! "

They're not sold in China but they're still unclear about ingredients. I requested more verification and will update when I receive a response.

UPDATE:

June 8, 2015

"We do not ask for official verification from our manufacturer to ensure that the ingredients, which are purchased in Europe, have or have not been tested on animals."

They purchase their ingredients in Europe, where testing ingredients on animals is banned. However, they don't require verification of that. My opinion is, that their products and ingredients are most likely not tested on animals at any stage of production, but there's not enough proof for them to go to the cruelty-free list. It is up to you to decide if you're comfortable purchasing from this brand.

Emité Make Up

April 30, 2015

"Emité Make Up is only manufactured in Europe and in Europe is animal testing forbidden in cosmetics for many years. So none of our products is tested on animals in any stage of manufacturing or finishing process.

When it comes to animal testing in ingredients for example ingredient Mica, it was in the past tested on animals by the raw material manufacturers. For all cosmetic brands this type of ingredient is the same as the last 50years of manufacturing. So this ingredient and similar is tested on animals in the past, but that is the same for all brands around the world and it can´t be undone. However when the regulations regarding this came to Europe many years ago they stopped this testing's. And all our ingredients is made in EU so, we can claim "free from animal testing".

We have a mother company, but only with Emité as a cosmetic brand. (They have beauty school etc also).

We only sell in EU and NA.

Emité brand has only vegetable ingredients. No animal fat, ingredients etc."

Based on this response I believe Emité Make Up to be cruelty free and 100% vegan.

City Color Cosmetics

May 5, 2015

Unfortunately, due to copyright restrictions, I'm not able to post their response. Their parent company Beauty Plus Global, INC is on PETA's certified list. The brand told me that they have very strict rules against animal testing through entire process of manufacturing. They also offer some vegan options.

However, one problem I have with them is that they sell in China. They state that they're exempt from the animal testing requirement since they're also manufactured there. I'm not sure about that statement and will have to do more research about it. Due to that, they go on my grey list for now.

Eva-NYC

May 14, 2015

"Proudly, Eva-NYC does not and never will, test on animals. The answer to all but your last question is, no. As far as vegan options; Royal Jelly, derived from honey bees, is utilized in our Skip the Spa Thermal Hair Wrap.  No other Eva-NYC product uses animal derived ingredients."

They answered almost all of my questions and are 100% vegetarian with a lot of vegan options! I feel positive about this brand, however they haven't mentioned whether they require verification from their suppliers. I requested that information and will update.

UPDATE:  July 2, 2015

" Any factory or supplier we use must have GMP documents asserting that no materials are tested on animals."

In my opinion, this brand is cruelty-free!
