"First, thank you for contacting us and for being a well-informed consumer.  Our products are not tested on animals in any stage of production nor do we hire any third party to do so.  We are independently owned and have never made any practice of testing on animals.  We sell our products coast-to-coast and have a few international distributors located in the UK and Canada.  We do offer a vegan friendly option – our mascara."

They themselves don't test on animals, but they haven't mentioned their suppliers. I requested clarification.

They still haven't mentioned their suppliers, even though I specifically asked for that in my clarification e-mail. I asked them again, and have yet to receive a response. I will update once they do, but grey area for now.

"I can confirm that Antipodes product range is free from Animal testing.  All Antipodes products are Vegetarian Society Approved. We never test our skincare on animals, and there's no cross-contamination during the production process. All our products are free from any animal ingredient resulting from slaughter, and free from genetically modified organisms (GMOs). We don’t use any animal by-products except honey, which is accepted and eaten by vegetarians because honeybees must make honey to live.

We are also part of SAFE however this is yet to come through on our marketing items and packaging.  We believe this is sufficient and are satisfied with our choices.

China's currently regulations on animal testing for beauty products have meant we have made a conscious decision not to go into this market through the retail brick and mortar channel.  Currently online sales into China fall outside the animal testing requirements.

You can be assured Antipodes products have never been tested on animals.

I'm not sure how I feel about this company. Looks like they're cruelty-free, although they haven't explicitly mentioned that they require verification from their suppliers. Vegetarian Society UK requires all their products to be free of animal testing.

We are required to test the water resistance claims and SPF ratings by the FDA. These tests are done via a third party, but not on animals (SPF and water resistance tests are done on people)."

Based on this response, I can't consider this company cruelty-free, since they don't require verification from their suppliers.

They use propolis in their products, which is a derivative from bee hives. This makes their products not vegan, although they're vegetarian.

They are certified by leaping bunny (double checked on their website) and all of their products are vegetarian, with most of them being vegan!

"We are 100% vegan owned and operated -- as a matter of fact we were one of the first all vegan companies out there formulating products and bringing attention to one of the most crucial aspects of formulating a vegan product. Ingredients being tested on animals were overlooked/ignore and we were probably the only company doing things the hard way at the time. Choosing this path meant spending hours of research time, contacting raw material manufacturers and asking for documentation on the raw materials we wanted to work with. Our ingredient choices dwindled down nearly by 80%, leaving us with very few choices, which made things very difficult for us, but we would not have had it any other way :D

Unfortunately, even companies using the term 100% vegan on a particular product formulate products that are not vegan -- quite a few companies own several brands (think Estee Lauder, which owns Aveda, La Mer,  Bobby Brown, Clinique, Ojon, Origins, MAC, ) and use the same manufacturing facility. Some companies create a vegan line in addition to their main non-vegan lines and promoted them under different brands. 

Beauty industry is not so pretty at times and that is why us vegans have to stay united. It is wonderful that you keep asking questions, don't ever stop!

Now onto what we do! Our vegan policy can be found on our website, under about us section, http://www.ecosevi.com/pages/our-vegan-policy and we are not sold in China and do not plan on selling anywhere outside of the United States at this time. We may work with some Canadian or European companies (France, England) perhaps, but that is the extend we plan on expanding. We hand-craft products and do not plan on mass-producing, hence we won't be all over the world :)"

Very clear and thorough response! I believe this company is cruelty-free and vegan.

They haven't mentioned if they required verification from their suppliers that they don't test on animals, so I requested some clarification. I got a response that they do require it. Based on the above, I believe this brand to be cruelty-free and 100% vegan.

I'm so upset to hear that this company isn't cruelty-free. They didn't even try to state that they don't test on animals and "proudly" sell their products in China. This brand is certified by PETA and I'm not sure why. I don't consider it to be cruelty-free.

This response is pretty generic so I requested some clarification. These are the questions I asked:

1) Are your products or raw materials tested on animals by a third-party? 

2) Do you require verification from your suppliers and manufacturers that they don’t test on animals?

3) Are all of your products vegan?

Here's the response I received:

"No they are not, we do have confirmed signatures that none of our raw material companies test on animals, or our contract manufacturers. 

Yes, all of our products are vegan although, there may be some products in the market that aren't. We used to use a Hydrolyzed Silk Protein, which is from Silkworms, we now use a Quinoa Protein. 

So, please just check out the labels, any newer products will have the Quinoa Protein. "

They cleared everything up and answered all of my questions. I believe this brand to be 100% cruelty-free and vegan. (Although gotta watch out for older products that weren't vegan)

They answered almost all of my questions with the exception of whether they confirm with their suppliers that the ingredients haven't been tested on animals. They're also almost vegan with the exception of their Ultimate Foundation, which uses silk powder. 
I requested verification about their suppliers and will update once I have it.

"ARTDECO explicitly declines animal testing.

Since its foundation ARTDECO has neither carried out nor commissioned any animal tests. Animal testing for decorative cosmetic products has been prohibited under the German Animal Welfare Act since 1986. Tests on animals for all cosmetic finished products have been banned since 1998. A corresponding ban has been in place since March 2011 for cosmetic raw materials as well, which ARTDECO expressly welcomes! Pursuant to this legislation, raw materials developed for use in cosmetics may no longer be tested for compatibility on animals. ARTDECO specifically requests confirmation of its suppliers that no animal tests were carried out. The skin compatibility of ARTDECO products is tested by volunteers in a renowned dermatological clinic. Therefore ARTDECO products can officially be declared as ‘clinically tested’. The application or patch tests (epicutaneous tests) are carried out by voluntary test persons to determine the local tolerance of the products.

ARTDECO is against animal testing.

What comes to your question regarding vegan friendly options we have to inform you that with ARTDECO there is no product line which is rewarded as vegan. Therefore we do not keep any lists with vegan products."

Everything here looks good, however they haven't mentioned China and if they test when required by law. I have requested that clarification and will update when I receive it.

The company answered all of my questions thoroughly and I'm confident to say that they're cruelty-free and 100% vegan. I'm very happy when companies can provide clear answers to their customers.

All of my questions were answered thoroughly. I'm confident to say that is brand is free from any form of animal testing plus they're 100% vegan! They're also certified by PETA for being cruelty-free and vegan. They also have wonderful customer service. The lady answering my questions was really nice and helpful. They responded to my inquiry within hours.

"Pupa has always been committed to being aligned with the present and future decisions of legislation.

As a consequence, our finished products are not tested on animals, as laid down since 2004 by legislation on cosmetics.

Our way of proceeding voluntarily follows the guidelines of the European Community which recommend, for ethical reasons, the carrying out in sequence in vitro tests and in vivo tests on human volunteers under dermatological control.

The in vitro test predicts any irritation, so that all human volunteers can take part into the in vivo test in complete safety.

As far as the ingredients are concerned, a distinction has to be made: those that have been used for decades in the production of cosmetics have a toxicological file which includes all the data regarding the testing on animals done in the past, whilst for raw materials discovered since 2009, it is compulsory for testing on animals to be replaced by scientifically valid alternative methods. 

In addition, from 2009 to 2013, the prohibition has gradually also been extended to the sale of cosmetics containing ingredients tested on animals in countries outside the EU. 

In conclusion, despite the important progress that has been made in recent years, the exclusive recourse to alternative methods still requires commitment and development of scientific knowledge so that these methodologies can guarantee all the aspects of product and ingredient safety to protect the health of consumers, which remains the real priority.

Pupa exports its products both to Europe and outside Europe.

None of the countries where our products go requires safety tests on animals for our products to be registered and put on sale. To date, Pupa products are not present on the Chinese market."

I'm very upset to say that Dior makes cosmetics available for testing in China. However, I respect the company a lot for being so transparent with the customer.

They didn't specify about China. Will ask for clarification and update. Gray list for now.

I asked all of my questions again and received the following response: 

"Please be assured that we never test on animals or associate with suppliers who test on animals."

Again, very generic and doesn't address all of my questions. Requests for clarification haven't been responded to. However, I just noticed that they're certified by Leaping Bunny, but they're on Logical Harmony's Gray Area list. I'm honestly not sure whom to trust in this situation. The response I got from them before is more in depth. I'm going to leave them in Gray Area list till I get more clarification from them and it's your choice to decide whom you trust. I would also recommend contacting the company yourself and seeing how they respond to you.

We follow both Swiss and European regulations and we produce all the cosmetic products according to the European Norm ISO 22716.

Everything seems good, however they didn't specify whether their ingredients are tested by a third party. I'll request clarification.

Based on this e-mail they're cruelty-free, however they confirmed that they're sold in China. I'm not sure whether perfumes need to be tested in China, they didn't specify whether third parties perform testing on their materials. They're on the Brands to Avoid list on Logical Harmony. I'm putting them in the gray list and it's up to you to decide.
